Below are recent highlights of news over the past two weeks. | | | | | | | Canada's New Housing Minister Has Already Demonstrated He's Clueless | Canada’s new housing minister has only been in office for a few days, and already stumbled. In a Bloomberg Interview, Minister Sean Fraser pledged to make housing more affordable without lowering prices. He reiterated the housing-is-an-investment mindset, before dropping suggestions that would reinforce higher prices. Great news for investors. Not fantastic if you pay taxes, or you need affordable housing. | | Inflation Jumped Higher Last Month, to 3.3% | Canada's inflation rate bucked its recent trend of slowing last month and instead rose at a 3.3 per cent annual pace in July, Statistics Canada said Tuesday. That was an increase from 2.8 per cent the previous month. Gas prices were a major factor pushing up the inflation rate, mostly due to what economists call the base effect. | | | | Average House Price Hit $668,754 in July, up by more than 6% in past year | July home sales saw the largest year-over-year increase in more than two years, but were little changed from June, the Canadian Real Estate Association said Tuesday. On a non-seasonally adjusted basis, the number of homes that sold during the month edged up 8.7 per cent from the prior July to 41,186.
| | How Canada's Unemployment Adjustments Artifically Lowered the Rate | Do you recall other peak economic cycles? Think back to 2007, 2000, 1989… or further back if you remember them. Those were nothing compared to the current economic prosperity. Aside from last year, no other July has ever reported a smaller share of unemployed Canadians. It’s an employee’s economy, where they call the shots, and employers listen. No one needs to even really look for a job.
