RBC Canadian Inflation Watch

Canadian inflation pressures still high but slower in September.

Growth in BoC’s preferred inflation gauges slowed, but still surpassed the 2% target. The latest BOS survey revealed that firms anticipated lower inflation than consumers in the near future. Businesses’ wage growth expectations trended lower as labour markets cool. Gasoline prices dipped down in September but still higher than the levels from a year ago.

Canada Still Hasn't Seen The Full Impact of BoC Rate Hikes: National Bank

Canadian inflation is slowing and that may prevent the Bank of Canada (BoC) from hiking rates further. The National Bank of Canada (NBF) warns that even if there’s no hike, a significant impact from previous rate hikes has yet to be felt. A rate hike takes years to work its way through the market, and only a little more than half the impact is currently reflected. Even without a hike, expect the impact of higher rates to continue to slow the economy in the near-term.

Retail Sales Fell in August and were Flat in September as Consumers Closed their Wallets

Retail sales fell by 0.1 per cent to $66.1 billion in August, Statistics Canada reported Friday, adding that advanced estimates for September look like no growth, too. The data agency says six of the nine subsectors it tracks were lower.

Sales at gas stations, health and personal care stores and general merchandise stores grew, but every other type of retailer saw sales decline.

Bank of Canada Maintains Policy Rate, Continues Quantitative Tightening

The Bank of Canada today held its target for the overnight rate at 5%, with the Bank Rate at 5¼% and the deposit rate at 5%. The Bank is continuing its policy of quantitative tightening.

The global economy is slowing and growth is forecast to moderate further as past increases in policy rates and the recent surge in global bond yields weigh on demand.
